Cinemagraphs have taken the internet by storm. And caught the attention of a reality television queen. Perhaps you’ll recognize the famous ‘smize’ below.
Flixel Photos, an app that specializes in creating your own cinemagraphs, is being endorsed by Tyra Banks.
Banks was quoted saying, “When I first saw the cinemagraph, it blew my mind and took my breath away. It had a ghostlike quality. It was a photo but it was alive — it gave me chills.” She plans to use the app frequently on the latest season of America’s Next Top Model.
The app is free (though an upgraded ‘pro’ version will run you about $10) and allows you to create your very own cinemagraphs.
For the uninformed, these are movie-like still images, similar to the GIF. However, the movement is restricted to a specific area of the image, and looped continuously. One might consider them to be ‘cinematic’ in a sense.
Even with this pop culture endorsement, the cinemagraph has been in circulation for quite some time on the web. Many have already created their own version, and find themselves enamored with the images by Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg. From creative photography, to favourite movie scenes, these images come in a variety of mesmerizing movements. It’s hard not to fall in love with these movie-like photos.
Check out the video of the app in action. It looks really user-friendly and pretty damn fun. If you need more convincing, you can also check out people’s creations on the Flixel Tumblr.
